Model Example Answer

Public celebrations, such as national holidays and festivals, often see governments allocating substantial funds to ensure their success. While these events foster national pride and unity, some argue that the resources could be better spent on more pressing issues. This essay will discuss both perspectives and present my view on the matter.

Firstly, public celebrations serve an important social function by bringing people together and fostering a sense of community and national identity. These events provide opportunities for citizens to celebrate shared values, traditions, and history. For instance, festivals like the Fourth of July in the United States or Bastille Day in France are not only celebrations but also reminders of national heritage and unity. The social cohesion and joy generated by these events can have lasting positive effects on society, promoting social harmony and cultural continuity.

However, the significant expenditure on such celebrations can be seen as excessive, especially when there are other critical areas in need of funding. Critics argue that the money could be better spent on healthcare, education, infrastructure, or social services, which directly improve citizens’ quality of life. For example, a country facing a healthcare crisis might benefit more from investing in hospitals and medical staff rather than extravagant public events. Prioritising essential services can lead to tangible improvements in public welfare, addressing immediate needs and long-term development goals.

In conclusion, I believe that while governments should continue to support public celebrations, they must also ensure a balanced allocation of resources. A prudent approach would involve scaling back on extravagant spending and redirecting funds towards critical public services to achieve a harmonious balance between celebration and essential needs.
