Hi,
my name is Aldo and I have a question about the task band 7 descriptors for task 2 about Grammatical Range. The descritpor says :”a wide range of complex structures”… does it refer to complex sentences only (as many websites report) or also to other complex structures beside the complex sentences (modals, passives, complex noun phrases…)?
Hello Aldo,
Thanks for your question. It means you should be able to use a variety of structures: complex and less complex. You should be able to use more ‘advanced grammar’: inversion, gerund/ infinitive clauses and other clauses, mixed conditionals, ellipsis, extra auxiliary verb,… The higher the IELTS band, the more you need to sound and use grammar like a native speaker and show off that you have that grammar. This means not only the complex structures, but also the less complex structures and mix them all together.
I hope this helps,
Kristof
