The pie charts compare the distribution of energy capacity in gigawatts (GW) for the year 2015 with projections for 2040. Overall, the total energy capacity is anticipated to nearly double, increasing from 6.688 GW in 2015 to 11.678 GW by 2040. There is expected to be a substantial shift away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy sources, with solar and wind power projected to experience the most significant expansion, while nuclear energy and other renewables are anticipated to decline.
A notable change is evident in the share of fossil fuels, which is forecasted to decrease from 64% in 2015 to 44% in 2040. Similarly, nuclear energy and other renewables, which constituted 6% and 23% respectively in 2015, are expected to diminish to 5% and 21%.
In contrast, renewable energy sources are projected to see considerable growth. Solar energy is expected to exhibit the most dramatic increase, rising from 2% in 2015 to 18% in 2040. Additionally, wind energy is forecasted to double, growing from 6% to 12%.
