Model Example Answer

The trend of migration to urban areas in search of better opportunities is increasingly prevalent. However, city life can present numerous challenges that complicate this pursuit of a better life. In this essay, I will discuss some of the difficulties associated with urban living and suggest how governments can enhance the quality of life in cities.

One significant challenge of urban living is the high cost of living. Cities tend to have steeper prices for housing, food, transportation, and other essential services compared to rural areas. For instance, rent in major cities like New York or London can consume a large portion of an individual’s income, leaving little for other necessities. To address this issue, governments can implement policies to provide affordable housing. For example, subsidised housing projects and rent control measures can ensure that low- and middle-income families can afford to live in urban areas. Additionally, offering subsidies for essential services such as public transportation and healthcare can help reduce the overall cost of living for city residents.

Another major issue is the high level of pollution and the crowded living conditions in cities. Urban areas often suffer from poor air quality due to vehicle emissions and industrial activities. This pollution poses serious health risks to city dwellers, including respiratory problems and other chronic illnesses. Governments can tackle this problem by investing in green infrastructure and promoting the use of public transportation. For example, expanding and improving public transit systems can reduce the number of private vehicles on the road, thereby decreasing pollution levels. Additionally, implementing stricter environmental regulations on industries can help reduce emissions and improve air quality. Creating more green spaces and parks can also enhance the living environment, providing residents with areas to relax and exercise.

In conclusion, while urban areas offer numerous opportunities, they also present significant challenges such as high living costs and environmental issues. Governments can play a crucial role in mitigating these difficulties by implementing policies aimed at reducing the cost of living and investing in green infrastructure.
