  1. They will determine the structure of the essay and influence your cohesion and coherence.
  2. Answering the question properly will have a beneficial impact on your Task Achievement.
  3. It will save you a lot of crucial planning time, as you know how to answer and structure the question.

Overview

  1. Opinion Questions: Agree or Disagree
  2. Advantages and disadvantages
  3. Discuss both views
  4. Problem and Solution
  5. Two-Part Question
  6. Quiz

1. Opinion Questions: Agree or Disagree

They are the easiest questions to deal with, as you just have to pick 1 side, you either agree or disagree and then write 2 paragraphs with claims that back up your position.

You could potentially be indecisive and in the middle, not picking a side. Still, We strongly recommend you pick 1 side, not to be in the middle, as it is far easier to write the easy if you pick a side. So, don’t complicate your life and potentially lower your score!

What’s more, you do not need to write what you really think. Just pick the side you find the most arguments during the brainstorming. The arguments/claims that you can easily develop and write about.

Typical Question Words

What is your opinion? Do you agree or disagree? To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Example Question

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Structure:

  • Introduction: paraphrasing the question and clearly stating your opinion (agree or disagree)
  • 1st Body paragraph Agree/ disagree: 1st claim to backup your position
  • 1st Body paragraph Agree/ disagree: 2nd claim to backup your position
  • Conclusion: expressing your opinion some more and potential recommendations for the future

2. Advantages and Disadvantages Questions

These questions are again not so difficult to answer. You just need to write 1  body paragraph with some advantages, the other paragraph with some disadvantages.

If your opinion is requested, then you should give your opinion in the conclusion. If your opinion is not requeste, then do not write about it!

Typical Question Words

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.

Example Question

Computers are being used more and more in education.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.

Structure:

  • Introduction: paraphrasing the question and state that you will discuss both advantages and disadvantages.
  • 1st Body paragraph: topic sentence write that you will discuss some of the advantages, next write about 2 or 3 disadvantage.
  • 2nd Body paragraph: topic sentence write that you will discuss some of the disadvantages, next write about 2 or 3 disadvantages
  • Conclusion: write your Opinion if requested : so decide if there are more advantages or disadvantages

For the body it does not matter which you discuss first, the advantages or disadvantages, it’s just your personal choice.

3. Discuss Both Views Question

This question is already more challenging, as you do not have any freedom, you need to discuss both sides! Here you need to brainstorm ideas that not necessary support your opinion, since you need to talk about both viewpoints and only write your opinion in the end.

Typical Question Words

Discuss both points of view and give your opinion.

Example Question

Computers are being used more and more in education. Some people say that this is a positive trend, while others argue that it is leading to negative consequences.

Discuss both sides of this argument and then give your own opinion.

Structure:

  • Introduction: paraphrase the question + state that you will discuss both sides.
  • 1st Body paragraph: topic sentence, state you will talk about the positive effects, next mention 2 or 3 positive effects.
  • 2nd Body paragraph: topic sentence, state you will discuss the negative effects, next mention 2 or 3 positive effects.
  • Conclusion: pick a side and state your Opinion.

Again, for the body paragraphs it does not matter which you discuss fist, positive or negative effects, is just your personal preferences and what works best for you.

4. Problem and Solution Questions

Once more you have some personal freedom, you can pick the most important problems and think of the most useful solutions.

Since the question asked for problems and solutions, you need to discuss more that 1 problem. So, 2 or 3 problems and 2 or 3 solutions for those problems you mentioned.

In this question, you are not asked for your opinion. So, you should not discuss it in anyway!

You have 2 possible ways of structuring the essay:

  1. You either write a paragraph with only problems and another paragraph with the solutions to these problems.
  2. The other option is you pick a problem and you write about it, finishing your paragraph with the solution. The next paragraph would mention another problem and its solution.

This is a personal preference and what works best for you. The only thing is that when you take the second option you have to limit it to 2 problems and solutions, otherwise you won’t be able to fully develop your arguments.

Typical Question Words

Problem and solution. Cause and solution.

Example Question

Students are becoming more and more reliant on computers.

What are some of the problems associated with reliance on computers, and what are some of the possible solutions?

Structure 1:

  • Introduction: paraphrase the question, state you will discuss some of the problems and their solutions
  • 1st Body paragraph: topic sentence state that you will talk about the problems. Next, write about 2 or 3 problems
  • 2nd Body paragraph: topic sentence state that you will talk about some of the possible solutions. Next, write about 2 or 3 solutions.
  • Conclusion summarize the essay and some suggestions for the future

Structure 2:

  • Introduction: paraphrase the question, state you will discuss some of the problems and solutions.
  • 1st Body paragraph: topic sentence, state the first problem, next develop it and finish with a possible solution.
  • 2nd Body paragraph: topic sentence, mention the 2nd problem, develop it and finish with a possible solution.
  • Conclusion: summarize the essay and some suggestions for the future.

5. Two-Part Questions

These are the most complicated questions as you need to discuss 2 parts. It is not just 1 question, but you get 2 for the price of 1. The structure on the other hand is not so challenging, as you answer each question in 1 paragraph.  Again, your opinion is not asked for and should not be discussed!

Typical Question Words

There will normally be a statement and they will then ask you to answer 2 separate questions.

Example Question

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual well-being.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction? (question 1)

How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers? (question 2)

Structure:

  • Introduction: paraphrase both questions and state that you will discuss both.
  • 1st Body paragraph: topic sentence stating you will discuss the Factors of job satisfaction. Next discuss 2 or 3 factors of job satisfaction.
  • 2nd Body paragraph: topic sentence mentioning you will talk about how realistic job expectations for different workers is. Next,  discuss 2 or 3 different groups of workers and how realistic job satisfaction is for them.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the question and some possible suggestions for the future.
