1. Describe a work of art that you saw

You should say:

  • When you first saw this work of art
  • Where you saw it
  • What it looked like

And explain your feelings about it.

Example Answer

I vividly remember the first time I saw Vincent van Gogh’s masterpiece, “Starry Night.” It was during a visit to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, and it was a moment I’ll never forget.

I encountered “Starry Night” in one of the museum’s galleries, surrounded by a crowd of mesmerized onlookers. As I approached the painting, I was immediately struck by its vibrancy and intensity. The swirling patterns of blues and yellows seemed to dance across the canvas, drawing me in with their energy and movement.

The scene depicted in “Starry Night” is instantly recognizable – a tranquil village nestled beneath a swirling sky filled with stars. The iconic cypress tree in the foreground adds a sense of depth and perspective to the composition, while the crescent moon hangs low in the sky, casting an ethereal glow over the landscape.

What struck me most about “Starry Night” was the emotion it conveyed. Van Gogh’s bold brushstrokes and vivid colors seemed to capture the tumultuous emotions that must have been swirling inside him as he painted. There was a sense of longing and melancholy in the night sky, yet also a feeling of hope and wonder.

Standing before “Starry Night,” I felt a deep connection to the artist and his vision. It was as if I could feel van Gogh’s passion and intensity radiating from the canvas, enveloping me in its embrace. I was awe-struck by the sheer beauty and power of the painting, and I found myself lost in contemplation, pondering the mysteries of the universe and the profound depths of human emotion.

Leaving the museum that day, “Starry Night” lingered in my mind long after I had stepped outside. It was more than just a painting – it was a transcendent experience that left an indelible mark on my soul. And for that, I will always be grateful.

2. Describe a worth watching theatrical performance.

You should say:

  • what the play was about
  • where it took place
  • how was the acting and quality of the production

and explain why it was worth watching.

Example Answer

One theatrical performance that stands out to me as truly worth watching is a production of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” that I had the privilege of seeing at the Globe Theatre in London.

“Hamlet” is a timeless tragedy that revolves around the titular character, Prince Hamlet of Denmark, and his quest for revenge against his uncle Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet’s father, the king, and seized the throne. It’s a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and existential crisis, filled with memorable characters and iconic soliloquies.

The Globe Theatre, with its rich history and intimate atmosphere, provided the perfect setting for this performance. Situated on the banks of the River Thames, the open-air theatre recreated the Elizabethan-era experience, immersing the audience in the world of Shakespearean drama.

As for the acting and production quality, they were nothing short of exceptional. The cast delivered powerful performances, bringing Shakespeare’s characters to life with depth, nuance, and emotional resonance. The lead actor portraying Hamlet captured the complex inner turmoil of the character with haunting authenticity, while the supporting cast provided strong support, each adding layers of complexity to their respective roles.

The production itself was masterfully directed, with innovative staging and dynamic choreography that kept the audience engaged from start to finish. The use of period costumes and props added authenticity to the performance, transporting viewers back in time to the world of Renaissance-era Denmark.

What made this production of “Hamlet” worth watching was its ability to breathe new life into a classic work of literature. Despite being centuries-old, the themes explored in the play – love, revenge, morality – remain as relevant today as they were in Shakespeare’s time. The production’s thoughtful interpretation and skilled execution reminded me of the enduring power of theatre to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and spark conversation.

Moreover, seeing “Hamlet” performed live at the Globe Theatre was a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. The energy of the actors, the ambiance of the venue, and the timeless brilliance of Shakespeare’s writing combined to create a theatrical masterpiece that resonated long after the final curtain call. For anyone with a love of theatre and a passion for great storytelling, this production of “Hamlet” was truly worth watching.
